Over the course of the project, partner institutions have digitized and uploaded into Europeana over 75.000 records: including museum-quality objects, details of art nouveau architecture, works on paper and other archival material. The project was funded by the European Commission, and it was realized with the cooperation of 25 partner institutions from all over Europe.

The focus of the digitization effort was on architecture and the decorative arts. The partner institutions include some of the most prestigious museums of decorative arts in Europe, such as MAK in Vienna, Röhsska Museet, Design Museum Gent, as well as the Museums of Decorative Arts in Prague, Budapest and Zagreb. For the first time ever, material from these collections was digitized and made available online, resulting in an unparalleled resource for the study of the Art Nouveau period. The results can be accessed from the common European portal, Europeana, as well as from the collection databases of the participating institutions. Because of the nature of the participating partner institutions, every effort was made to provide high-quality metadata to accompany and describe the digitized objects. Thanks to efforts of one of the partners, the University of Marburg, controlled vocabularies were used throughout the project. These multilingual vocabularies (which have been translated into the languages of all partners) enable multilingual search in the Europeana system. The names of makers and manufacturers – over 3500 of them overall – have also been used consistently in the project, with the help of authority lists which rely partly on the most renowned such resources, such as the AAT, and partly on the contribution of partner institutions.

In addition to providing digital images and descriptive data on 75.000 objects, the project also created over 2000 3D models of Art Nouveau objects, selected from the collection of 17 partner museums. The high-quality laser scanning was carried out by Steinbichler AG of Germany, and the results are available via Europeana in the form of easy-to-use 3D PDF files. The potential applications of such 3D models – which include curatorial tasks such as condition checking or assistance in restorations projects, as well as potential commercial applications, such as the 3D printing of gift shop items – have also been explored in the framework of the project, and a number of recommendations were made for the wider use of these results.

During the two years of the project, partner institutions have made every effort to make Art Nouveau better known. A series of exhibitions were organized by almost all the museum-partners in the project, exhibitions which showed material digitized in the project, or which were enhanced with the results of the digitization project. Comprehensive information on these exhibitions, as well as other events organized in the framework of the project – such as international conferences, lectures and publications – can be found on the central website of the Partage Plus project (partage-plus.eu).

Thanks to the efforts of the project, the number of Art Nouveau objects available via Europeana has increased considerably. As the records are the result of new digitization and are accompanied by high-quality metadata, they can form the basis of future research, and now can be used by everyone in the preparation of exhibitions or publications about the period. In fact, the consortium partners are thinking of ways to make further use of the material which has come to light thanks to the project.

The conference dedicated to the study of Art Nouveau was organized by KIK-IRPA (Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage).

Emphasis was laid on the different coexisting trends and peculiarities of art nouveau, both in Belgium and abroad. Freed from the yoke of historicism, artists and craftsmen drew their inspiration from highly diverse sources, revisiting local cultures and celebrating secular artisanal techniques (wrought iron, hammering, sgraffito, ceramics, stained glass…) and regional materials. The invention of this unique decorative vocabulary was enriched by the assimilation of organic forms inspired by nature, archetypes of industrial civilization as well as japonism.

The symposium was a unique opportunity to present the variety of examples from our cultural heritage as well as to exchange point of views on the matter. Several Partage Plus partners delivered presentations during the two days conference.

A mosaic of the end of a century: artists, events, societies, activities” took place on 25th-27th February 2014 in the beautiful Polish capital, Warsaw. The conference was prepared in participation with the National Museum (MNW) in the Partage Plus consortium. The Partage Plus project sparked research which has brought to light a large group of hitherto unnoticed works which have not been studied in a wider cultural context. Broadening of the range of accessible works will change the perception of much of the art created around 1900 preserved in major museum collections.

Its aims were to update all consortium on the status of each work package, make decisions on how to conclude the project, celebrate the outcomes of the Partage Plus project and discuss the results of the second project review. On the last day of the meeting (Thursday) partners were given the opportunity to talk about their results of the Partage Plus project.

Evening meals at traditional Polish restaurants introduced hungry partners to the gems of Polish cuisine. On the last day of the meeting an excursion to Krakow and its Art Nouveau highlights organized by the Wojciech Weiss Museum Foundation (WWMF) was scheduled.

Partage Plus – Project for the Digitisation of the Heritage of Secession

Article published in “Informatica Museologica” (Croatia) November 2013, Text: Dunja Nekić

Secession, or Art Nouveau, one of the last universal styles reflected in all branches of art, particularly in the applied arts, was a logical choice for the launching of a project to unite institutions Europe-wide. Inspired by nature, with identifiable curvilinear form and ornamentation of flat lines on the facades of buildings and on everyday use items, it became the characteristic of the time that aspired to combine art and craft and at the turn of the century to unite Europe in a single unique style. Although in time somewhat forgotten because of the styles of Modernism, Secession is now more popular than ever. It is well represented in museum collections, archives, libraries and buildings throughout Europe, and is known under the names of Art Nouveau, Liberty, Modernism, Arte Nova and Jugendstil.

The object of Partage Plus – Digitising and Enabling Art Nouveau for Europeana is to unite and digitize the whole of European heritage of the Art Nouveau period and make it more familiar to the large European public. The project, which will last from March 1, 2012 to February 28, 2014, has 25 contributing partners from 17 countries of Europe. The Museum of Arts and Crafts is the leading partner in the project for the Croatian area, for, we recall, at the end of 2003 and the beginning of 2004, it put on the exhibition “Secession in Croatia”.

The object of this project is to digitize more than 75.000 objects and create 2.000 3D models of expertly selected objects from the Art Nouveau period. It is planned to digitize about 5.000 objects and buildings from the whole of Croatia, and to make about 200 3D models of the best known work of art.

It is important to point out that it will be possible to search all the material, which will increase the accessibility of Art Nouveau materials on the Internet several-fold, via the leading internet portal for culture of the European Union – Europeana. Searching for content created in the project will be enabled in 17 European languages of countries taking part in the project, including Croatia.

The award ceremony took place in the Tonio Guerra hall at the Grand Hotel Rimini.

The Italian Liberty Photo Contest, launched and directed by Andrea Speziali, was organized by A.N.D.E.L. (Associazione Nazionale Difesa Edifici Liberty) and stood under the patronage of Cultura Italia, Enit and Partage Plus.

The first prize has won Jonathan Della Giacoma, a Swiss photographer, for his picture of the villa Zanelli in Savona. The villa Zanelli is a jewel of Italian Liberty architecture. It was built in 1907 and is attributed to a student of Fenoglio.

The second place went to Andrea Ferrari from Bologna for his picture of the Palazzo Alberani, located in via Farini in Bologna. In fact, this photo was the most viewed and liked by the public. Palazzo Alberani, built by Ettore Lambertini and Paolo Graziani, was an attempt to update the traditional concept of the casa-bottega (residential house with shop or workshop on the ground floor) according to the ideas of the Italian Liberty movement.

For her picture of the villa Ruggeri in Pesaro Laura Ingrid Paolucci was also awarded the second place by the jury. The beautiful villa, impressing with its exquisite sculptural decoration, was built between 1902 and 1907 by Giuseppe Brega.

The third place has won Rita Galvano. She took a picture of the impressive kiosk Ribaudo in Palermo. The kiosk Ribaudo was built in 1894 by the architect Ernesto Basile, one of the most famous architects of the Art Nouveau era.

After the award ceremony, the artistic director of the event, Andrea Speziali, attended the audience on a guided tour through the Grand Hotel Rimini, a beautiful example of Italian Liberty architecture in the Romagna.

You can now take a look at the first results of the 3D scanning!

In June 2013 Partage Plus project partner Steinbichler Optotchnik scanned over 100 objects from DmG`s turn-of-the-century collection in 3D. A big job, whereof you can find an extensive coverage HERE (video about 3D scanning at the Design museum Gent in June 2013). Several types of objects and materials, like thin handles and silver, proved to be unsuited for 3D scanning. On the other hand base metals and ceramics provided no problems. The Flemish ceramicists from the turn of the century could probably never have foreseen that their creations would be placed upside down on a turntable bathing in flashing light …

If you want to catch a glimpse of some Art Nouveau gems from the turn-of-the-century collection of the Design museum Gent visit the updated Partage Plus project site!

Here you can find 3D images of artworks such as:

- Ornamental jug with grapes, ceramic workshop Maes, Sint-Amandsberg (BE), 1899-1920,

- Die Rheintöchter, porcelain manufactory Zsolnay, Pécs (HU), ca. 1903,

- Bowl with moth, Gabriël Argy-Rousseau, Sèvres (FR), ca. 1915-1920,

- Lady with vide-poche, Karl (Charles) Korschann for Louchet, Paris (FR), ca. 1900,

- Bedchamber chair, Henry van de Velde, Brussels (BE), ca. 1899.

It will be the 15th art history seminar, an initiative of the Documentation department of KIK-IRPA: Art nouveau revisited: trends and peculiarities.

Emphasis will be laid on the different coexisting trends and peculiarities of art nouveau, both in Belgium and abroad.

The symposium will be a unique opportunity to present the variety of examples from our cultural heritage as well as to exchange point of views on the matter.

If you would like to give a presentation on this issue, please send following documents to artnouveau[at]kikirpa.be before the 20th of December : a short summary of maximum 15 lines, a provisional title, your CV and a list of publications. The presentations, which will last about thirty minutes each, will be given in French, Dutch or English. More information can be found on www.kikirpa.be.
